PIKE CO., Ind. (WFIE) – A woman in Pike County faces a long list of charges after an elderly woman she cares for was taken to hospital.
MPs said on January 20 they had a warrant to search for stolen items from a house in the 800 block of South County Road 500 West.
They say Sara Deffendall was home and was not cooperative.
MPs say an 88-year-old woman was found on a bed in the living room. They say that she was breathing shallowly, that she was covered in flies and her own filth, and that she had a big bedsore.
She was taken to hospital by ambulance and Adult Protection Services notified.
MPs say they have also found drugs, several glass smoking devices used for methamphetamine and marijuana, as well as several stolen items including electronics, guns and prescriptions.
They say a pistol found in the house had the serial number scratched. MPs say Deffendall claimed it belonged to his son, Danton Willis. He was charged with erasing identification marks from a handgun.
As they moved Deffendall’s handcuffs, they say she grabbed a deputy’s hand and dug her fingernails into his skin.
They say she continued to resist and scream curses while being transported.
His charges include dependent negligence resulting in serious bodily harm, resistance to law enforcement, bodily harm to a public safety officer, possession of paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a public nuisance.
The Vanderburgh County Coroner confirms the 88-year-old woman later died in hospital.
St. Petersburg firefighters said the house burned down around 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
He is under investigation by the state fire marshal.
They ask anyone with information about the fire to call the state arson hotline.
This number is 1-800-382-4628.
The State Fire Marshal said calls can be made anonymously and callers who provide information leading to an arrest could be rewarded up to $ 5,000.
